Hand Woven Jacket for Deep Dive

Deep Dive is a case competition, where students solve commercialization challenges of research groups about to spin out their scientific inventions into a startup company.

Six artists produced artworks inspired by Finnish startups presenting at the symposium.

This work was prompted by VirtuFashion and IonCell that work with integrating technologies, sustainability, biomaterials, fashion, and virtual reality. These two startups sparked the inspiration for this work.

The work was produced by collecting broken electrical cabling from Aalto's Marsio audio visual takeout. The work is a jacket woven out of internet and network cabling alongside 360 video shots of forests and nature. Together they imagine alternative relationships to viewing nature, textiles, and social environments. The project overlaps with Virtufashion as the viewer is taken to a third space when wearing the "internet garment" reflecting the nature of virtual fashion avatars. The video material has been filmed in Denmark and Finland and the garment has been hand-woven.
