Solo Exhibition

2019. Genuine Expression. Utua Brand Store, Aleksanterinkatu 36, Helsinki, Finland

My first exhibition was in June 2019 at Utua Brand Shop (Aleksanterinkatu 36, Helsinki) during Pride month called Genuine Expression. I exhibited 17 pieces (painting & drawings) and also made a site specific piece inspired by the Utua Brand shop using sample pieces of leather to create a collage called Strength in Community.

Later, I was interviewed for a Demi article in the 10/2019 edition.

Genuine Expression Works

One work depicts Saara Aalto who represented Finland in Eurovision 2018.

  • Emergent Properties

The other two works are not based on specific people. The neutral expressions on the latter two were meant to show that being queer doesn’t mean that it’s a bad thing or a good thing, it’s just who they are, and it’s a part of their life. The message in these works is that queer identities are made up of a lot of small things. It’s made up of history, the present, the future, personal and collective experiences, and bigger things as well as all the small.

  • Emergent Properties II

    2017 / Collage on Paper

To summarize, the queer identity and the LGBTQ+ community are made up of many things and can’t really look one way or be pinned down to be one experience.

These drawings represent more of what it feels to be queer, whether that be a happy, sad, or neutral experience. The artist also wanted to try and connect the pieces with something more mystical and organic.

For instance, the white lines in the tears and background represent stars or rhythmic patterns we can find in nature. The main message is that being queer and LGBTQ+ is natural but it’s also confusing, and almost magical because of the pride and love many have for the community.

The drawings are intended as a short flag series. Three of the portraits are based on real people but the other half are not. Two represent the rainbow flag, one represents a gay man, and one represents that the rainbow flag can also represent the entire community, not just gay men. Then the artist also made portraits representing the most widely accepted lesbian and bisexual flags. What was important to them with this series was to represent people who may have not been represented in media otherwise, like feminine Black lesbians or bisexual Black men.
