Solo Exhibition
2020. Harmony. Skanssi Shopping Center, Turku, Finland.
For this exhibition I prepared for a few installation works. I exhibited three bee hive installation sculptures Harmony Hives, one small city exhibition Rainbow Nation, six smaller environment sculptures, one polymer clay piece Harmony, two watercolor paintings, and eight faces. So 21 pieces in total.
I was also featured in the Skanssi Shopping Center media and it was a part of the Lux Skanssi Light Festival.
Harmony Hives / 2020-2021 / Mixed Media Light Installation sculpture / Gabriella Presnal
Harmony Hives consists of bee hive sculptures representing harmony between the environment and society. Originally a site-specific work for Skanssi Shopping Center in Turku, FI that has roof beehives. The materials symbolize tearing down or recycling the old and building something that works in harmony with our environment and the people in our societies. The city emphasizes cultures from around the world and pride but also the blurring of our social constructions and how we understand ourselves in our society. The idea at its center is that anti-oppressive movements, justice, and solidarity are human nature.
A large part of the inspiration behind this piece is also the communities and spaces the artist has lived in. For instance, the old notes from high school classes and cardboard boxes previously used for moving between countries. The work uses materials like recycled wire, cardboard, paper mache from high school notes, lampshades (from recycling centers), sticks, acrylic paint, and more. The project also sourced many recycled materials from Skanssi Shopping Center in Turku, FI.
