Välillä väärässä is an event-like, experimental contemporary art exhibition at Väärätalo, on Koskenparras in Imatra. The show features media installations, spatial works, performances, sound pieces, photography, drawings, a wall painting, and a radio program. Many of the works invite the audience to engage and interact with them.

The exhibition has been created in collaboration with the City of Imatra and Aalto University’s Department of Art and Media. The works are connected to Imatra in different ways—through their site-specificity, their subject matter, or other conceptual links. The building itself, Väärätalo, frames the exhibition with its history, its recent past, and its present condition.

The house, which once accommodated a hotel and nightclub, among other things, has stood empty for several years and no longer fully meets the expectations we usually place on a building. The participating artists have explored the spaces from their own perspectives, often using found materials from the house as starting points for their works. Inside turns outward, and the rooms reshape themselves to “host” the worlds that the artworks bring to life.

For the artists, the working process has meant stepping into the unknown, facing unexpected situations and uncertainty. This has opened up new ways of seeing and making. The building itself exists in an in-between state, suspended between past and future. As human care has withdrawn, other beings have begun to take over the space. The works in the exhibition grow out of this condition, creating encounters at the threshold between what has been and what is yet to come.

Alongside Aalto University students and staff, the exhibition also includes artists and faculty from Uniarts Helsinki’s Academy of Fine Arts, as well as local artists from Imatra.

The future of Väärätalo after the exhibition remains undecided.

Contact / 2025 / 02:30 / Video Installation using mirrors

The video installation documents the locality of Imatra using photography and overlaid inscriptions written on handrails in the Imatra area when overlooking the rapids and nature. Contact is inspired by Mary Pratt’s contact zones where cultures spatially meet, clash, and merge with one another.
